We all get that day of frustration when the internal memory of our smartphone is filled to the top. From here a Calvary begins every time we have to update an application or, much worse, if we want to install a new one. If your smartphone has a slot for a microSD card, you may be able to expand the internal memory a little by expanding its domains.
Before starting I want to warn that the speed and possibilities of a microSD card are lower than the internal memory of the device. Therefore, I always recommend acquiring a terminal with all the memory that the budget allows. If you end up using an SD card, make sure it’s fast , class 10 at least.
Expand internal memory from Android 6.0 Marshmallow onwards
From the marshmallow version onwards (Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Android 7.0 Nougat and the future Android O), Android natively supports the use of the microSD card as part of the internal memory, although with some restrictions. You will be able to pass some applications to the microSD card, but not all of them, and you will also be able to save the photos of the camera directly on the microSD card.
When using the micro SD card as an extension of the internal memory you will have to format the card in a special format compatible with Android. This operation has two effects: you will lose all the information that the microSD card had and, besides, you will not be able to use it with other devices as we did before.
Use the memory card as internal memory from Android Marshmallow
To expand the internal memory thanks to a microSD memory card you must first format it as internal memory. Go to Settings> Storage and USB> SD Card . Once here, click on the three points at the top right and select Settings . Among all the options, choose Format as internal , in the next screen click on Delete and format .
At the end of the formatting process you can choose if you want to transfer the data you already have automatically. I prefer to do it later manually and choose applications that I do not care if they are a little slower, since everything that is hosted in the SD goes slower.
Now it is already possible to pass some applications to the SD card. The applications that allow it will have an option within Storage in the application information.
Expand internal memory to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop with Root
- Tools and downloads
Micro SD card (Class 10 minimum).
- Download and install MiniTool Partition for Windows, in Linux we can use GParted.
- Install the Link2SD application from Google Play.
- Link2SD Install on Google Play
Before continuing, the smartphone must be rooted . If you do not have Root permissions on the device you will not be able to pass any application to the memory card. You should also make a backup copy so you do not lose your data.
Procedure to follow to expand the internal memory:
We must restore the device to the factory state, which entails a total loss of data and applications. To do this, go to Settings> Backup and reset> Factory data reset .
Insert the SD card in the reader of your PC or in an external reader. In MiniTool Partition, click on the drive of your microSD card. It is very easy to distinguish it by its capacity. Do not modify the hard drive of your computer.
Now you have to delete the partition of the SD (all will be deleted) with Delete and generate a new one with Create in the FAT32 file system and as Primary.
Then click Apply.
Next, on the right under Operations click on Split Partition .
Separate the microSD card into two partitions: one internal (for applications) and one external (photos and other files).
Now select the partition you are going to use as internal, click Format partition and select the file system Ext3 and partition label as Primary .
Once this is done, do not insert the SD card into the smartphone, for now, keep it aside. Restart your smartphone, but do not save any application or let the Play Store do it.
Start the SuperSU application and update the SU binary (by the way, update the SuperSU application through Google Play, which never hurts).
Turn off the smartphone and insert the microSD card.
Restart the phone and start the Link2SD application (internal memory).
A message appears asking you what is the file system of the second partition of the SD card, click on Ext2 and restart the phone again.
Open Link2SD again and then, in Settings , click on Installation Location and select Internal .
Within the Link2SD settings click on Automatic Link; you must leave this option activated.
And ready! In your next installation, you will see a notification informing you that the installed application has been linked to the SD card.
One last tip: DO NOT remove the SD card if the phone is on, first turn off the smartphone.
